Monthly Roundup : July 2018

I am the first to hold my hands up and say that I am not a Mum that looks forward to the school holidays. I feel that I am a much better parent when I am not around my children all day every day and that isn't a reflection on them but me. I do wish people would be more honest about it, all the posts I read and saying how wonderful it is having their children around all the time and I think that adds to the guilt I feel!

We're a couple of weeks in and so far, so good.  The biggest problem has been the weather - as I frequently complain on here, its just too hot for me so I've not wanted to go far!

July was a busy month with the end of nursery and the school year.  We had T's taster sessions which also included a bedtime story session and teddy bear's picnic. What a contrast they were to when E was having her school tasters. Other than a wobble each time she went in, she was absolutely fine and had a great time.  She's been asking every day whether its time to go to big school so I'm hopeful that it will stay that way!  Leaving nursery for the last time did feel a little surreal though!

E had to perform in a show with her dance group at the local village fun day. Its been lovely seeing her confidence increase! There's been quite a number of shows but she hasn't danced in all of them because, in all honesty, its just been too hot to stand outside, let alone dance!

July saw us with our first puppy emergency. Luckily he was soon back to his usual cheeky self!  We've started to walk him a little now, although we've been told not to walk him too much whilst he's so young.  Its been really rather nice getting outside of an evening, clearing my head and getting some fresh air.

With the weather being so hot I've not been able to get out in the garden anywhere near as much as I'd have liked to and because we're south facing, so many of the flowers have just burnt away and dried out. So needless to say, I've not managed to get the garden looking how I want it. I'm hoping we can make some more changed to it again over the coming months. The fencing needs replacing on one side to make the garden safe for Buddy - at the moment we have to keep him on a lead when we take him out there.  I'd also really like to raise the beds, to make it easier for me to maintain them and, as an added bonus, stop Buddy from digging them up!

It's been a little..... challenging having T at home. She's at a funny stage, more than ready for big school but still so young. We're having difficulties with listening and doing as she's told, particularly when it comes to me asking her to do anything. And the meltdowns, boy am I over them!  I'm hoping that going to school and having to do as she's told will help to settle the issue. We just have to make it to the end of the holidays!!

D has started taking the girls swimming on a Saturday afternoon and they are absolutely loving it. The first time they went, they spent 10 minutes or so sat on the side of the pool, anxious about getting in. By the end of it they were far more confident and happy splashing about.  They both absolutely love it and I do too as it means I'm getting a couple of hours quiet time, which is much needed with it being the holidays!

Whilst we've had a quiet-ish couple of weeks, we've had some birthday parties to go to which E has loved and its always lovely not to have to entertain them for a couple of hours!

I'm not entirely sure what August will bring, we have no plans made.  Just to survive I hope!

  2. Oooo quiet time whilst they're off swimming sounds fabulous! I'm glad the settling sessions went well, L's were very hit and miss, mainly miss if I'm honest! You would hate me, I'm loving this weather. Got myself set up outside to work as we speak, though I'm sure we'd be best friends when we got to my extensive gin collection! #TwinklyTuesday

  3. Lovely idea to reflect on special happenings in a month. I home educate and absolutely it is challenging to have children around all the time. We all need time to ourselves sometimes. You brought back memories of when my children were younger and the flowers from your garden looked so like a display I did the other week - thought it was ours for a minute #TwinklyTuesday and Happy August!

  4. Lovely to read an honest post about the kids being on their summer holidauys! My youngest (now 10) can be very challenging at times as she constanly wants to be entertained and can have quite an attitude! #TwinklyTuesday

  5. I do know what you mean. I have enjoyed having both kids at home but as I also don't work in the holidays (I'm a teacher), I feel I am not getting a break from them at all! I'm with them all day, every day, 7 days a week, and feel I am losing my adult mind a little! I love them dearly and have been looking forward to the holidays but a little me time wouldn't go a miss!

  7. Sounds like you've had an eventful July and I must agree with you, this hot weather is keeping me awake day and night and I just don't want to move! Hopefully we will get a bit of a break to enjoy the outside, otherwise will just have to keep on slapping on the suncream! #TwinklyTuesday

  11. I completely agree about the summer holidays. I find the first two weeks usually go ok, but having all three on my own for the other four is hard work and I start to run out of ideas! #twinklytuesday
