The Childhood Tag

I recently read 'The Childhood Tag' posts from both Freddies Mummy UK and Northumberland Mam and thought I'd join in! Here we go...

1. What were you not expecting/not prepared for before becoming a parent?
I did SO much reading whilst I was pregnant, I read about anything and everything remotely related to pregnancy, birth and babies.  With all the reading in the world, I was still completely unprepared for it all. With your first, I honestly don't think you can be completely prepared. Its all new and the first time you've dealt with any of it.  If I were to narrow it down though, it would be the sheer exhaustion. You've never been as tired and wonder how the hell you will function through the day but somehow you do!

2. What is your main piece of advice for new parents?
Trust your gut instinct, it won't fail you. I would tell them to listen to all the well meaning advice they are given from midwives to fellow mummies, health visitors to the lady on the check out.  Everyone has their own way of doing things and all that is important is that your baby is healthy and happy and you are happy.

3. How do you encourage family time at home?
We're homebirds mostly and with renovating the house, we are often at home and pottering around with different jobs which the girls help with. Recently, D has started to take them swimming on a Saturday, which is great as they get to spend some quality time with him and I get a little break. Since having Buddy, we've also started trying to get out for a little walk somewhere too.

4. How do you balance being a blogger with parental duties?
Take a look through my posts and its quite clear that I don't! Like many, I'm juggling work and the children so I just fit it in as and when. I would love to do more but its not something I stress over.

5. What was your favourite toy growing up?
I remember loving My Little Pony, Care Bears and dolls.

6. Have you kept any of your toys from childhood?
I have some books and one teddy bear, although he's packed away somewhere and I don't know where he is!  We moved a lot when I was growing up and things were disposed of each time.

7. What are your children’s favourite toys?
They go through spells of having a favourite toy.  T's used to be Donkey but he's been relegated to the teddy basket now.  Currently she loves her baby doll.  E has never been one to have a favourite toy to carry around or play with but she does have a Piglet soft toy that is often found next to her in bed.

8. Do you actively limit the amount of screen time your kids have?
I try but often fail.  Its something I try not to stress too much over, they're both healthy and active and are quite happy to play if I decided the TV is going to be switched off or the tablet is a no go.

9. How do you reduce plastic waste in your home? – Reusable bottles, buying wooden toys, avoiding excessive food packaging, etc.?
We use reusable bottles and recycle everything we can. Its hard to do much about the kids toys and the packaging they come in though, as I'm not about to start buying them things because of it. I also get quite cross because we do our bit with recycling everything but we can't do anything about what happens to it when it leaves our bins, we don't drop litter but there's plastic and litter being dropped everywhere.

10. What advice would you give to parents who want to start blogging?
Its a great way to record memories and to get things out there, sharing your views and connecting with like minded people.  A few people I have spoken to say they're going to do it and it looks easy.... and then get disappointed because they're 'getting nothing from it', expecting people to just find them in a sea of millions of blogs. Look at it as a hobby and if you get any recognition from it, brilliant.
